We all know when we should, or more likely with a phobic when we need
to go to the dentist... We realize it without too much effort.. that's
the easy part.. The hard part is making that call, arranging that first
appointment.
Our minds play games with us It doesn't hurt that bad, I’m just to busy
to deal with it right now, I’m sure if I just cut down on the sugar, and
brush more that tooth will settle down. We start to adjust our eating
habits, and get physical symptoms (just to name a few)
Then as time goes on we realized again, we are going to have to deal with
it... the tooth won't settle down, and now there's another one, on oh
dang look how big that cavity it getting, and my gums are starting to
get really sore, we stop smiling, and start to cover our mouths when we
talk, we get fearful of eating anything that may damage our teeth more
(just to name a few)
Fear starts to settle in .. we feel trapped... WERE DAMMED IF WE DO DAMMED
IF WE DON'T...
We're dammed if we do deal with it because now we have to face our fears,
It all seems so overwhelming. People tell us it will be ok, it is not
like before, you will feel better, but the fear side says. Ya, right easy
for you to say, how can it not hurt; it makes me sick just thinking about
it, I don't believe you. So we put it off again.
Then the dammed if we don't fear starts to eat at us. If we don't go get
them looked at we will certainly start having more pain, more decay, more
fear of the work that will have to be done, we start to have trouble sleeping,
eating, and generally enjoying life. (Just to name a few).
Then that gives us another excuse well there so far gone now what can
I do? If I didn't’t feel I could handle a filling 1 year ago how in the
heck can I handle what needs to done now. I’m sure my teeth are beyond
repair. The dentist will be in shock. (Not that we know what needs to
be done yet, but we are sure each, and every tooth will need work, or
to be pulled). And well we just don't think we can handle that, and it
will be too expensive, because we look at having to be done all a once.
And so the vicious circle begins. It may take weeks, months, or in my
case 14 years.
So now were at a stand still some of us get mad. No more. I have had enough
of this fear. I’m going to deal with it and start taking control of my
life. Some of us withdraw from friends, and family, they just don't understand,
some of us make ourselves physically ill, it starts to effect more than
our personal lives. It is now effecting or work, our whole being. We start
to panic we search for an easy solution, someone help us make it all better,
make it go away.
Then one day we realize we are the only one that can make it better. We
search for answers. We don't know it yet but be have already started facing
that fear we have taken that first step...
Luckily for those of us that have found this site, we get to read stories
of other people that are dealing with the same thing... We are not alone,
we have support, and compassion from people who have been there, and people
who are in the same stage that we are, people that have the same fears.
Now there is hope...
But wait now there is a change in some of their posts. They talk less
about their fears, and more about how good they feel. We want the same
thing! How do we get there? Do we trust these people? Do we trust the
dentist? Do we trust ourselves?
Trust me from one phobic to another things, have changed, find a good
dentist, and take the plunge, you won't regret it...you know this has
to be done, the first appointment is the hardest, but you are in charge,
you can get up and leave anytime... but... you won’t. Because you wouldn’t
be here reading all the post on this site if you didn't want to deal with
this fear once and for all....
All that you are going through right now... Will start to fade away with
the first appointment. It can't get any worse can it? Take the plunge
do it now. You will feel so much better once you have taken that step
to be in control of your fear.
After that first visit for a consult those fears will come back. You think
of all the work that needs to be done. That fear starts telling you there
is no way you can do it. Well think back.. You thought that about the
first phone call. Was it as bad as you thought?
The first visit for work will be the same way. You will think, “no way
I cant do it” but. It is the same. It is not that bad. But the plus side
is how proud you feel of yourself.
Think back, take stock. You have dealt with the first fear finding answers
to help you deal with this fear. You found this site.
Your hands shaking you make that call for the first consult. Second monkey
off your back.
You go to the first appointment for work. You feel you are at the height
of your fear and you are!
After the appointment you can't believe it they were right. It wasn't
so bad.
You are now well on your way you have started taking back your life. It
may be a long road but. You are over the worst part. There is no looking
back you are doing it. What a feeling!!!
Please don't wait too long for that first consult. Decay waits for no
one... Is it going to be easy? No. Is it going to be worth it? You bet
100%
