Relative Analgesia
This involves the
patient breathing in a mixture of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen
( sometimes known as "happy gas"). This very rapidly
produces a pleasant relaxed feeling. You will remain conscious
at all times but you may feel a little drowsy.
The gas is inhaled
through a special nosepiece and the effects are reversed by
breathing in pure oxygen.
Many dentists use
this technique.
Sedation
This involves medication
which can be taken orally, as a tablet or in liquid form,
but may also be given as a injection in the arm.
The patient
becomes drowsy and oblivious to the treatment whilst still
able to cooperate with the dentist. The effects take some
time to wear off and supervision is required for some hours
afterwards.
